As a student of Koos Verheul at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, he was awarded upon graduation in 1979, the Solo Diploma with distinction. In 1978, along with Duo partner of now 25 years, pianist René Eckhardt, he won the International Gaudeamus Performers Competition.
Today Harrie Starreveld is widely regarded as one of the world's leading specialists in contemporary flute music.
Starreveld is a member of Holland's 'New Ensemble' and together with René Eckhardt and bass clarinetist Harry Sparnaay, in 1982 formed 'Het Trio', for which composers world-wide have composed, to date 180 compositions.
As a soloist Harrie Starreveld has played the flute concertos of Berio, Boulez, Donatoni (Puppenspiel), Ibert, Jolivet, Nielsen, Schwantner, Schoenfield and Weddington (Triple Concerto, with Harry Sparnaay and Ernest Rombout), with orchestras such as the "Residentie" Orchestra, the Radio Chamber Orchestra of Holland, the Schönberg Ensemble, the New Sinfonietta Amsterdam, the Oriol Ensemble Berlin, Orchestra della RAI, the New Ensemble, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra and the Percussion Group The Hague.
Some of the conductors he has worked with include Ernest Bour, Enrique Encinar, Lukas Foss, Marc Foster, Otto Ketting, Reinbert de Leeuw, Lev Markiz, and Ed Spanjaard.
Starreveld regularly performs for the Dutch radio and television, and gives recitals, all over the world, including America, Australia, Hong-Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and many European countries.
Since 1980, Starreveld has been professor of flute at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and regularly gives master-classes in Austria, Belgium, England, Estonia, Korea, Taiwan and recently helped develop the quarter-tone flute for the world renown flute makers, Osten Brannon. He gave the instrument's U.S. premiere on October 8, 1995 at the Art Institute of Chicago playing Maurice Weddington's "Deovolente" for solo quarter-tone flute.
Harrie Starreveld is praised for his brilliant performances of contemporary music, and has won the prestigious Edison Award in 1993. To date he has had 14 Cds released. |
